News Review: March - Fraud costs councils #1bn per year

Research by the public-sector risk-managers' association Alarmrevealed that local authorities were having to pay out, on average,\#250,000 for fraudulent claims each year - adding up to a combined cost of\#1bn in personal injuries and accidents that never happened.

The study found that the \#1bn figure purely covered the cost of payoutsand did not take into account the cost to councils of investigation anddefence, which push the figure up to several billion pounds' worth oftaxpayers' money
